5-Minute Easy Morning Yoga Flow | Meghan TV

I have been practicing yoga for about eight years now. I started when I was sick because everyone told me I should. I would go to classes, lie in these seemingly ridiculous postures, and leave class checking my recent text messages and feeling like I’d just wasted 90 minutes when I could have been so much more “productive.” But I stuck with it because I thought it was what I was supposed to do and how I was supposed to do it.

Yoga is an ancient practice that developed thousands and thousands of years ago and is steeped in loads of tradition and wisdom. Its original purpose was to help get the kinetic energy moving and released from the body to invite in longer meditation practices. Here’s the thing though — we’re not living 5,000 years ago. In fact, more has changed in the last 100 years than in the 4,900 that preceded them (or something like that). Yoga for us is the movement part of our day, not preparation to sit and be still.

What happens if that ancient practice doesn’t mesh with your modern groove?

On today’s episode of Meghan TV, Amber Joliat, founder of Misfit Studio and featured teacher on the Wanderlust circuit shares an awesome 5-minute yoga flow that you can rock in the morning, in the way that feels just right for you! Do it!

Simple 5-minute morning yoga flow with @meghantelpner + @misfitstudio

(And if you’re loving the orange, organic t-shirt I’m rocking in the video, it’s part of the welcome package for the Culinary Nutrition Expert Program.)

Do you feel bad for not fitting the “yogi” mould? Do you push yourself to go to classes and then spend the time waiting to leave? If you don’t want to be there, how is that helping?

Yoga is what we want it to be and what we need it to be. The only part that matters is that you move. Move in a way that connects your body to your breath and you are yoga-ing.

Now tell me: What first got you on the mat? What does your yoga practice (whatever that may look like) do for you?

I first delved into the world of yoga when I was 18. I struggled a great deal with anxiety and I thought it would be a good way to learn how to breathe properly during those heightened times.

My competitiveness got in the way of my yoga back then, I lost track of it for a year or two. Attending yoga sessions complete with live music really brought the joy back into practice for me.

Now I realize their is no race or gold star if I manage to nail a pose but tweak a muscle in the process. Overall, turning restorative & yin yoga into regular rotation rather than occasional classes has been a real game changer too!

I dabbled in yoga from time to time, but really committed when I was 45. I know what you are talking about….for me lying there in these weird poses I was wondering if this was helping me or hurting me…….turns out it really helped… also got me to take an interest in meditation……the yoga has fallen away, but the meditation has stayed and now I practice Qigong, power walking and do toning work…..a little bit of yoga does sneak in from time to time. I loved this video and will make time for it!! Thanks Meghan!

Life is so crazy, so busy, so overstimulating. I needed to find a practice that allowed me to look inside, connect with my body, and connect with my breath.

What does my yoga practice do for me?
Yoga is inspiring, empowering, and always challenging. It helps out in my everyday life in ways I never imagined. I now practice at home with my husband just about everyday… very romantic ;)

After only doing yoga in my living room for a few years, I started going to yoga classes about a year ago… I go to hot yoga classes, which I enjoy thoroughly! I love the detox side of the mega sweat I get in the class (my skin feels sooo soft afterwards!), and I love that it is a moment that is all mine, for me, a moving meditation of sorts, because all I focus on is breath and movement. And I find that being surrounded with people that have the same affinity just enhances the experience, although I still do yoga in my living room :)
You know when we all have a hard time letting go of something bad that still makes us feel good (sugar, anyone?), well yoga is the proof something good for me can make me feel great! How could I not stick with it!

Thank you for sharing this. You have so much positive energy and are so inspiring! I started Yoga about 8 months ago, but life got too busy so I stopped. Recently I realized that I really need it so once in a while I try to do some of the poses I learned at home. (Now I will use this video as a guide!) As I was doing that my 1 year old started copying me and doing the same poses then my 3 year old joined. It was the cutest thing. Their favourite poses are 3 and 5. To my surprise even a 1 year old can do it:) never too early!

Loved the video! But I was confused at the end because In the last part, we only did the right leg. Don’t we need to do the other side? Thank you!
