Our dear little Flexi Lex has flown the coup and returned home to Ottawa to spread the good word of whole food deliciousness. We miss her dearly already and hope she will come visit to don her onion goggles soon. She says goodbye and leaves us with this special recipe - her "signature dish". So here you have it: my Detox Guac.
I make this all the time, actually I?m pretty much famous for it. My friends call it my signature dish. In university I would eat it every other day for lunch with a toasted whole wheat pita or even right out of the bowl with a spoon. I believe that it is probably one of the best things that you can eat to detoxify and boost your immunity. That must be why I never get sick! Really, I don?t. It must be all the super powered ingredients I use...
Garlic - One of the top detoxifying foods. Not only is it an antioxidant that helps prevent cancer and boosts the immune system, it?s also a natural antibiotic treating anything from the common cold and ?u, candida, and bronchitis.
Onion - Onions are high in quercetin, which helps relieve oxidative stress on the body and is great for allergies. It is also high in sulphur, which is amazing for detoxi?cation and digestion.
Tomato - One of the highest plants in phytonutrients (especially lycopenes) because of its bright red colour. Amazing for cardiovascular support, bone health, and anti-cancer.
Red Pepper - very high in vitamin C (almost 300% of your daily recommended intake) and A, which is great for immunity. The property in it called capsicum has wonderful anti-in?ammatory effects on your insides.
Cilantro - a super-powered blood detoxi?er, it helps control free radical production in the body. It?s also actually considered a good source of ?ber, with 2 tsp equally 5% of your daily recommended intake.
Avocado - eating an avocado is like taking your daily multi-vitamin. It?s full of good fats like medium chain triglycerides and phytosterols. It?s also high in omega 3 and omega 6 that helps promotes healthy skin, hair and nails.
Lemon - promotes alkalinity in the body, which is great because toxins and disease can only grow in an acidic environment. Lemon also aids in digestion and is super high in vitamin C.
Cayenne - promotes sweating which is your body?s way of cooling down...and sweating=detoxi?cation right!?!
Sea salt - full spectrum of trace minerals. Unlike table salt that has been stripped of all its minerals, sea salt has them all...very alkalinizing.
With these 9 ingredients, you can make the most amazing, most delicious, most good for you dish I think there is. It?s super fast, it?s easy, and it?s raw. Detox Guac is ridiculously high in antioxidants and feel good fats and is a colourful crowd pleaser.
Serve along side some organic tortilla chips and you?ve got yourself a detox party!
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 red onion, diced
1 ripe tomato, diced
1/4 red pepper, diced
2 tsp cilantro, minced
2 avocados, peeled
1/2 lemon, squeezed
pinch of cayenne
pinch of sea salt
- Place everything together in a large bowl and mash.
- Transfer to a pretty serving bowl and garnish with a sprig of cilantro.
- Serve along side with some organic tortilla chips, crudites, or eat with a spoon when nobody is watching.
