Taking The Naturo-Path: Dare To Detox Those Chemical Villains

As a Naturopathic Doctor I am constantly asked about detox diets and programs.

Take a deep breath and fear not, this does not mean we will ship you off to a faraway place and not allow you to eat for days on end. It means that I want to help increase your energy and vitality . My series of blogs will outline different aspects of detoxification and how you can best aid your body in elimination.

I recently was shocked by the statement "It is no longer are we toxic? but how toxic are we?"...scary yes but what exactly does this mean?  A recent biomonitoring study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, has revealed that out of 212 chemicals tested, all 212 were found to be in the blood and urine of most Americans. Six chemicals in particular, found in virtually every person, were identified by the CDC as probable health hazards. Ok, we get it we are exposed to many scary things so what next, where are these toxins found?

Let's start by looking at a few scary and toxic chemicals.

Bisphenol A, a chemical that has received much attention recently, is a toxin added primarily to plastic products and can linings. More than 90 percent of those tested in the CDC study were found to have BPA in their bodies. BPA is a high production volume (HPV) chemical widely used in manufacturing polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins used in nearly every industry. Humans appear to be exposed primarily through food packaging manufactured using BPA. Releases of BPA to the environment exceed 1 million pounds per year.  Start by drinking your water out of glass bottles, learn super healthy and fabulous recipes from Meghan that don't involve using foods that are in cans.

Another one on my hit list is Perfluorooctanoic acid. It  is used in non-stick cookware, stain-resistant clothing, certain food packaging and other heat-resistant products. What is wrong with this picture, non-stick cookware and stain-resistant clothing...really! Studies verify that PFOA contributes to infertility and other reproductive problems. Liver and immune system dysfunction are also associated with the use of PFOAs. Meghan, help, what is the best cookware to buy?

If you didn't believe us that fast food joints are bad let me introduce you to Acrylamide. A chemical carcinogen that forms when carbohydrate foods are cooked at high temperatures. French fries, fried chicken, and even coffee are all examples of foods that have high acrylamide content. The chemical is also used in plastics, cosmetics and water treatment products. Perpetual exposure to acrylamides is responsible for causing cancer and neurological dysfunction. Need I say more?

    I am so glad more and more people are getting educated on toxins. They are everywhere and Meghan is an excellent source for eating toxin free.

      Paderno is Candian made and is stainless steel. It is pricey but I have had mine for about 10 years and it has a lifetime left...though only a 25 year warrenty. If you step up to their professional line of Padinox, it has a lifetime warrenty. Stay away from their non stick and use any old cast iron seasoned you iron in your food while you cook. It took me time to get used to cooking with cast iron but I can now fry an egg and make pancakes no problem. Make sure you read on how to treat and clean a pan or you ruin your natural non stick coat. hope that helps and is accurate
