Let’s Get Ecosexy: The Wands Face Off

Written by Amy and Kim Sedgwick.

There's a lot of hype about the Hitachi Magic Wand (did you ever see that episode of Sex and the City?) and for years I didn't understand why. Although we carried it in our store, I just wasn't tempted to try it. I think it was mostly the aesthetic aspect - it looks more like a retro kitchen appliance than a sex toy (maybe this would be more appealing for kitchen enthusiasts like yourselves!) But when I eventually tried one I quickly understood its popularity. The Hitachi Magic Wand offers the most intense vibration of any toy, period. It's actually a bit too much for me on the high setting but for lots of women (particularly those who have difficulty reaching orgasm) the intensity is just the ticket.

About a year ago I discovered the Vibratex Mystic Wand - a smaller, battery-operated version of the classic Hitachi Magic Wand. Unlike the original wand which only has two speeds (low and high), the Mystic Wand has three speeds and three modes of vibration. I find the high setting is about the equivalent of the low setting on the Magic Wand. The Mystic Wand is made from silicone so it's easy to clean and phthalate-free. It's also helpful that it's cordless, as the Magic Wand isn't very travel friendly (I've heard of women trying to take it to Europe with rather unfortunate results- nothing worse than not being able to recharge your wand!).

Last but not least, Vibratex has recently come out with the Mini Magic Wand. It's even more compact than the Mystic Wand, and it's rechargeable! You have the option to charge it with the USB port on your computer or with your phone charger. This feature makes it especially great for those who travel overseas. Because it's smaller it doesn't have the intensity of the other two wands, but it's still far more powerful than most toys of its size.

One thing I like about all the wands is that they're well made. I've heard of women replacing their Hitachi Magic Wand after more than ten years of use. Since the other styles aren't electric they likely won't last quite as long but Vibratex is known for making quality products, so they'll still last longer than your average vibrator. Given the disposable nature of so many toys out there, it's nice to know your investment is going to last and there are many years of satisfying orgasms in your future!

Question Of The Day: Which wand is your favourite?
