I love it when my family members come by the kitchen to share their wisdom with us, and this time is no different as my mom (yes, yes — we look alike) shares her awesome secret to quitting coffee.

For as long as I’ve known my mom, she has been into health. Some of my earliest memories are of sitting on a mat at the back of her Jane-Fonda-style aerobics classes in Winnipeg. We never had sugary pop, candy, junk cereals or that kind of stuff around the house as kids and I have never, in my whole life, seen my mom sit down in front of the TV with anything other than a sliced apple, a cup of tea or perhaps the rare biscotti.

And because of all of this amazingness, she is rocking 62 (next week!) like no one else I know.

Coffee, however, has always been her non-negotiable vice. That is, until she gave it up.

In today’s special episode of MeghanTV, my mom shares her coffee-quitting tips and her new morning UnCoffee ritual. She is oh-so-wise. In this video, you’ll learn:

Patsy’s UnCoffee Recipe

  • Yield: 3 cups 1x


A delicious and comforting alternative to your regular cup of joe.



The Base

  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp raw cacao
  • 1 Tbsp Dandy Blend
  • 1 small scoop protein powder (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp Elixir (optional)
  • Honey or maple syrup to taste
  • 3 cups warm or hot water

Optional Add-Ins

  • Flaxseeds
  • Chia
  • Coconut
  • Hemp seeds
  • Avocado


  1. Add all ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth.

    What sort of protein powder do you use for your un-coffee? Whey? Vegan? Which one? Thanks!!!

      We used the Sunwarrior Blend protein powder (grain free). I am personally not a fan of whey as a good quality is very hard to find and it has the potentially to be highly allergenic.

    Love the video and I’m going to try it! Question: do you add avocado in with the drink and if you do, how does it change the taste?

      My mom loves adding the avocado- it makes the drink very creamy. I prefer avocado when I have it cold. It doesn’t affect the taste much at all.

    Love the idea of adding sesame seeds for calcium!!! I use them in cooking but it NEVER occured to me to add them to smoothies/drinks.

    I did Meghan’s Fabulous Group Detox in January & was worried about kicking coffee, though I knew it was hurting me, not helping me. Her detox was amazing & so sensible, that it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought! In fact, we felt so good & eating the right way was so easy, that my family & I have continued beyond the detox. I have had a few cups of coffee since the end of the 16 days &, I have to say, it did nothing for me, but upset my stomach (like it used to when I had one cup too many) & made me really jittery. I don’t plan on going back. Now, I warm up a cup of milk (almond/coconut/soy), add my Dandy Blend (love it!), honey, nutmeg & cinnamon & I love it! I love knowing it’s good for me, just like Patsy said. And, a cup or two a day is plenty to keep me satisfied, whereas I drank a pot a day of coffee before!

    Thanks for sharing, it sounds delicious and timely as I’m just about to kick coffee! Just wondering – do you think the results would be the same with an immersion blender? I don’t trust pouring hot water into my standard blender! Which blender do you use, assuming it’s safe for hot liquids?

      I’m not too versed in the use of an immersion blender. I would recommend putting just a small amount of warm water into your blender to blend everything together and then topping it up with hot water after.

    Ummmmm….gonna try this. I have been making your Morning Choco Latte with some extra maca but this looks much more adventurous. And I was just thinking about adding in sesame! Looks like I use many of the ingredients in the Elixer in my power smoothie. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing your Mom with us Meghan…so sweet:D

    Thank you!! I needed this! I just gave up caffeine (it’s been a week and two days!) and so I’ve been drinking decaf, but I really want to eliminate coffee altogether. Thanks for the wonderful tips!

    Love this post becauae it is challenging for most to drop coffee when it’s so embedded into society norms. I love drinking smoothies with superfoods, Dandy Blend & cacao powder too in lieu of coffee! Some of my favorites include: Tahini Carob & Superfood Chocolate Milkshake smoothies.

    Awesome video, Meghan! And good on your Mom! Looks like I’m the only guy on this post, and an ‘old boot’ at that. My journey to ‘Coffee-free’ was a little simpler. I confess I have a difficult time having the patience, or the time, to make up all those ‘blends’ from scratch, so back in April ’13 I began my road to a healthier lifestyle/diet with Amazing Grass Superfood drinks in the morning which evolved, very quickly, to eliminating ALL processed foods and actually cooking my own meals gluten-free (by choice, not necessity), more organic, raw, and natural, etc. It’s been a HUGE learning curve for me, to put it VERY mildly, but it’s become FUN! So, MOSTLY thanks to my daughter’s inspiration and your book ‘UNDIET’, Meghan, (my daughter wisely gave it to me for Father’s Day) I have a ‘new life’! I digress – sorry! Until I began drinking Amazing Grass (which I make into a smoothie by adding a banana or avocado or ???) I HAD to have my 24oz coffee in the morning! From the VERY day I started the smoothies I have had absolutely NO craving for coffee without even trying! It’s just blown me away! Confession – I’ve had the odd coffee since (maybe three), but I honestly can’t remember the last time – seriously! And I DON’T miss it one bit! Sorry for rambling on, but I get a little excited about the changes in my life! I still have SO MANY questions with so much to learn, but they’re slowly being answered and I’m absolutely enjoying MY ‘journey’!

    When I was learning to reach and maintain a healthy weight I thought it was all about ‘will power’. But now I realize so many of our daily choices (big and small) are really just habits.

    So reaching goals is all about building habits vs. denying ourselves. And finding something ‘super-powered-awesome’ to replace an unhealthy habit is excellent advice that works.

    Has anyone tried pre-mixing the dry ingredients and storing them in a mason jar to make this process even quicker on a busy morning? I’m thinking I’d just have to add a couple (or three) tablespoons of the mix, blend in the hot water and sweetener and be on my way. I would only need to make a cup at a time since my hubby is not a hot-drink-in-the-morning kind of guy. I’m thinking I could even re-purpose my little Mr Coffee pot to heat water for me while I’m getting ready for work. Thoughts?

    Love this! Can’t wait to try it. I’ve always known I needed to kick the habit, I just never wanted to b/c 1- I love the taste of coffee (I don’t drink it for energy), and 2- I wasn’t ready for the migraine that follows giving up caffeine. I ended up getting sick last weekend and never had my coffee that day, and haven’t had any since.

    Q- is the protein powder vanilla flavoured?

    I make Patsy’s uncoffee all the time now! It’s my go-to, ritual, ‘relax and have a break’ drink.

    The sesame adds a nice bitterness and I totally ‘get it’ as an ingredient.
