Detox : Thai Vibe Power Juice + Thai Vibe Smoothie

I cooked up a storm for our New Year's eve dinner with three amazing brand new recipes that I will be sharing soon. For now, though, I will share a little post-holiday detox juicing loving. This drink is a treat and a half whether you are in post-holiday recovery mode, ready to get started or just want some new smoothie or juicing inspiration.

As you know, my sweet little pineapples, I was adventuring on the fair and magical shores of Hawaii in December. Without a juicer in this kitchen where we were staying, wasn't I tickled all over when we passed by this juice bar on the East Coast of Kuaui?  Getting juice and smoothies in a far away land is amazing. The combos at this little gem were awesome. And pineapple did the sweetening trick... (here's a little munchkin pineapple we saw at the botanical gardens)

The juice I want to share today, has an ingredient in it that I have yet to brave on my own, though it is one I have always wanted to try including.

Cilantro.

People are either lovers are total haters. There is a great article all about it from The New York Times.

The haters often describe cilantro as having a soapy taste. There is a genetic component to why taste the soap and who doesn't that hasn't been fully understood yet though it seems that when cilantro is crushed (like in a pesto) or juices, that soapiness goes away. Either way, even for the haters, it might be worth trying. Why does it matter?

Cilantro is one of the best of the best foods for detoxing heavy metals from the body! (oooh0 looks like today's tweetable!) The chemical compounds in cilantro actually bind to the toxic heavy metals, loosening them from the tissues, blood and organs. Cilantro's chemical compounds then call "all aboard" on the transport shuttle and move these bad guys out of the body through pooping.Detox loving for sure!

Studies have also suggested that cilantro could be one of nature's best chelation agents, particularly for individuals who have been exposed to heightened levels of mercury (check this post about mercury in the mouth).

Bonus time- the qualities of cilantro oil have a powerfully positive effect on our inner digestive tract. The oils aid our digestive system in its production of digestive enzymes, acids and juices.

I am going to rain on this parade . I hate cilantro - it tastes mouldy to me... which is weird because I love every other green, veggie and fruit on the planet. I use to jokingly say "I never met a veggie I didn't like." No worries though, I will try the recipe with parsley, which is IMO is divine!!! Love the stuff. Thank you for your great blog Meghan! Happy 2012!

I am definitely a lover of cilantro!! Question: Why do you remove the stems of kale in your smoothie recipe? I always use them in smoothies and use them in recipes that call for kale too. Should I not be doing this?
