Raw Cocoa + Blueberries = TEDxToronto Worthy Culinary Alchemy

Did you know I was once a finalist for TEDxToronto? It's true. In 2010 I was pretty darn close to making the cut. Last year I was invited to attend. This year I'm going to speak there- ... I hope!

When my recently graduated Culinary Nutrition Students started pushing me me to apply again to speak at TEDxToronto this fall, I decided to go for it- again. This year though, I'm thinking it's got to happen.

The theme this year is Alchemy and, as you know, what I do everyday is alchemy; culinary alchemy that enhances our health, prevents disease and assists in accelerating healing. That post last week about serving up fried chicken in the name of cancer and more people thing it's a-okay is the very reason why my thoughts, theories, practices and knowledge around Culinary Alchemy are most certainly ideas worth spreading- or rather ideas that needs spreading.

My application was short and sweet and this is my 100 word pitch on why I should be selected:

If you combine blueberries and raw cocoa, the antioxidant value becomes greater than the sum of its parts. That is culinary alchemy.
What we eat will either build our health or build our disease- making the healing potential of culinary alchemy more vital than ever.
We have come to rely on the alchemy that requires millions of dollars for research in fancy laboratories, forgetting about the cure we can cook up in our kitchens with great food, and traditional cooking methods combined modern technology.
This is the alchemy that will inspire my TEDxToronto 2012 talk.
The TED audience is a an amazingly unique, diverse, forward thinking, creatively inspired, technologically advanced posse of superpowers. I know. I met some of them at last year's event.
So what would happen if we got those kinds of thinkers on to this whole notion of culinary alchemy and the amazing ability we have with every meal choice and snack combination we make, to heal disease, reverse degeneration, reduce the need for more hospital beds, reduce the health care expenditure burden, and most importantly, fuel a community, and perhaps a nation of vibrant individuals who work through the day with clear minds, empowering energy and optimal health?
Could all of this begin with culinary alchemy? Could all of this begin by simply combining blueberries and raw chocolate in our shake every morning in place of weird meal replacement foods, microwaved eggs, fast food muffins or freezer waffles?
I think it could! But that's not the only amazing combo.
What about the calcium absorbing power of combining rhubarb and lemon for an alkalanizing bone building lemonade, or the liver cleansing potential of a mojito made with anti-microbial mint, enzyme powered pineapple and liver cleansing kombucha? Could we heal the digestive tract with Irish moss infused hemp milk? And could we create the ultimate hydration beverage using the alchemy of coconut water and a pinch of sea salt?
Culinary Alchemy extends beyond the realm of beverages but the sip worthy ones are just so simple. And this is summer- the season of sipping!
To wet your culinary alchemy taste buds- here is a summer fave that is not in the book but includes some major culinary alchemy potion!

  1. Meghan, you absolutely should be there to speak! If there is anything further I can do to help, please let me know. I wanted to get something started, but didn't know where to even begin! I will do all I can to get you there :) Great recipe! I need to get me some blueberries, can't wait to get my hands on a box!

Meghan, I was thrilled to see this post! TEDxToronto would be crazy not to have you speak at their conference. Every time there is a chance for someone to hear you speak, then another life is changed. I know this firsthand. After graduating from your CNE program this spring, which trust me was AMAZINGLY life changing enough, I decided to further pursue my dream of becoming a raw food chef. I am typing this comment from afar; I am actually away right now at The Matthew Kenney Academy in Oklahoma City at raw chef school. So again a BIG thanks to you for helping me on this path. Just think how many more could find their perfect path in life (and health) after hearing your inspiring talk at TEDxToronto. I've always said I was your #2 fan after the lovely Christa Collie @ediblebalance, and I see she's made the first comment. Too funny! All the best Meghan.

Love the idea of combining foods for even greater benefits! Not sure how cocoa enhances the blueberries? Am I being dense but I don't see it explained in your article? The shake looks yummy! Eager to see Meghan "TedX"ed!
