A spoonful of sugar certainly does help the medicine go down- or in this case, a spoonful of honey helps the garlic go down. Same same.
‘Tis the season of the cold and flu. It also happens to be the season of parties and double dippers in the veggie dip, drunken makeouts with colleagues at holiday parties, moments under the mistle toe, old flings home for the holidays, shared bottles of champagne… you get the idea. Immune systems are pushed to their limits and germs they are a spreading.
Enter garlic as the super cure all.
Not only can garlic ward off vampires and give flavour to our food, according to herbalist David Hoffman, “Garlic is among the few herbs that have a universal usage and recognition. Its daily usage aids and supports the body in ways that no other herb does. It is one of the most effective anti-microbial plants available, acting on bacteria, viruses and alimentary parasites. ”

The volatile oil is largely excreted via the lungs, therefore it is used in infections of the respiratory system such as chronic bronchitis, respiratory catarrh, recurrent colds, influenza, whooping cough and bronchitic asthma.
Nope, that’s not all. Garlic can be used as a preventative for infectious conditions of the digestive system, supporting the development of the natural bacterial flora while killing off the pathogenic bad guys. Garlic also helps lower both blood pressure, blood cholesterol levels and generally improving the health of the cardiovascular system.
This is a remedy that most kitchens have readily available. It is available in capsule form, but I recommend you tough it out and go whole and raw.
1 clove of garlic, peeled and cut into 8 pieces
1 TBS of honey
- Mix the honey and garlic together in a little bowl and than scoop onto a spoon.
- Swallow it down with the help of a little water.
Note: It is best taken on an empty stomach and avoid chewing it- this will spare you the breath issue (though the garlic breath may spare you some of the aforementioned ways germs spread through the holiday season).
