I am a certified nutritionist (C.N.P.), a member of the Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners and also work as an holistic lifestyle consultant and digestive coach. My downtown Toronto practice is run out of a sweet and colourful artists loft space where I meet with clients and run my classes, workshops and city retreats. Thanks to my travelling and well read blog, Making Love In The Kitchen , I can brag about my international client base extending across Canada, around the United States, the Caribbean, the UK and as far reaching as Mozambique and Australia.
I like to provide a well rounded array of group-focused nutritional and lifestyle services including group-cooking parties, healthy eating workshops, corporate health programs and public lectures.
In the fall of 2008, I was appointed the official nutrition blogger for The National Post and have been featured on CTV News, CTVs’ eTalk Daily, Metro Morning, Fashion Magazine, Chatelaine, Toronto Life’s Daily Dish, Root’s Canada Buzz, She Does The City, Crazy Sexy Life, The Ottawa Citizen, AOL’s That’s Fit, Reader’s Digest Best Health, and on CBCRadio 3’s Foodie Fridays. Of course I also make it a priority to post regularly on my own blog Making Love In The Kitchen. I seem to have become a little recognizable in my Queen West/Parkdale neighbourhood. I suppose my bicycle covered in flowers with a flag on the back boasting the phrase, “Feel Good? Feel Great!” gets me noticed at the local farmer’s markets.
I wasn’t one of those people born to be a nutritionist. I actually still can’t believe how this all happened. Following a four-year struggle with digestive dis-ease, in 2006 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Trusting my instincts, I chose to keep my internal organs intact and instead chose a completely holistic approach to reclaiming my health that included yoga, meditation, acupuncture, Chinese herbal remedies and nutritional modifications.
I am a firm believer and living proof that when both the mind and body are in balance, total health is the inevitable result.
Prior to attending The Institute of Holistic Nutrition (IHN), where I nerded it up and graduated with First Class Honours, in my past life I had earned an Honours Bachelor of Applied Arts and was awarded the University Gold Medal from Ryerson University. I then spent several years working in client services in the high-stress world of advertising where I honed her skills in client management.
In addition to my formal education, I had the honour of studying Vedic Meditation under the counsel of Thom Knoles, a Maharishi or true master of Vedic pundits. I have broadened my understanding of the mind’s power over the body with courses on Vipassana meditation and the Mindful Wellness Stress Reduction Program. Upon completion of my nutrition studies, and before getting to work on my own practice, I took an extended holiday as the in-resident nutritionist at The BodyHoliday at LeSport, a mind/body spa resort in St. Lucia.
I do my best to deliver a refreshingly realistic approach to nutrition and healthy living. With humour and passion, I work to inspire people to take a look at their lives and to start living their dreams now. I’ve been told that my ridiculous enthusiasm for all things healthy, my positive energy and dynamism are truly motivating and inspiring.
Why not find out for yourself?
Cara recently completed her studies at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, where she will soon obtain the designation of Registered Holistic Nutritionist. After six years in the advertising industry and a personal health scare, Cara made a life-changing decision to return to school to explore her interest in holistic nutrition. Just a few weeks in, she quickly realized her interest had turned into passion. Once completely useless in the kitchen, Cara is living proof that a little ‘love in the kitchen’ training goes a long way. She is very excited to be part of this fantastic team and to now be helping Meghan assist others in learning to make a little love in the kitchen too.
Growing up with two older siblings that were both diagnosed with health problems, Alana knew at a very young age how important good health and how nutrition plays its part in it. This past February with the support of family and friends, Alana left her corporate career in marketing to pursue her passion for nutrition. She is now a full-time student at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition and hopes to educate and help others towards optimal health and nutrition upon graduation with her Registered Holistic Nutritionist designation. Alana’s passions include trying new recipes, cooking in the kitchen and is a self professed Kale chip addict. She is super excited to be part of the Making Love in the Kitchen team and is looking forward to getting Green with the new Green Smoothie Cleanse!
