Black Raspberry Ginger Sorbet
It is rare that I leave the city, unless it is to go up to my cottage, fly across the country or to another country. On a recent and rare adventure, I got in my car to visit a land far, far away (commonly known as the suburbs). Raspberries were calling my name. “Meghan! Come pick me!” They yelled. And that is just what I did. And then I made this raspberry sorbet recipe, among other things.
I suited up for raspberry picking and wow did we indulge in our fair share. Who knew that Thornhill was a wild raspberry haven. It is my city-dwelling friends. It sure is.
There is much debate in the healthy eating world about what berries are the best. Do we want strawberries or the powerhouse of blueberries? The super Goji or Golden Berry? Do you want to know what the best berry is? Do you really want to know what the very best berry is?
It is the berry growing right in your very own backyard that you can pick and eat right off the tree. Or the berry that is seasonal and local to you. That is the best.
Now Josh and I went out harvesting on my very first day of holidays and because I am human and had been working like a mad woman, I was feeling a little sicky and in need of some immune support. So what did my dear sweet Josh do? He made me the best medicine ever – a raspberry sorbet! A Black Raspberry and Ginger Sorbet.
And because he is the man that he is, he also sprinkled it with raw cacao nibs. Up until this creation I thought he was my dream boat. His place has now been taken by this sweet treat.

What is your fave summer fruit picking memory or experience?
so dreamy! i will definitely be trying it this weekend.
I used to come home from Kindergarten, step right off the bus and into the strawberry/raspberry patches my mom had. I used to eat them right off the vines (though she’d chastise me after about ten of them and insist we had to start washing them; I didn’t know why since they were quite perfect). After we washed them up, we’d grab a small bowl full and go for a walk to my grandmother’s, insisting that when we got there the three of us would have a “teddy bear picnic” on all the berries we hauled. It was awesome.
When I was a kid, my mom would take my brother and I up into the woods where we camped to pick wild blueberries. The best spot was perched on top of a rock cliff and was like a little clearing in the woods with a view of the lake. It’s still one of my favourite places to be, even if I can’t be there when the berries are ripe.
Hi,
just wondering what Vita-mix model you use in your kitchen?
Happy summer :-)
Monika
Do you have a hard time eating raw cacao nibs? I find they are hard to chew and get stuck in my teeth. Maybe it’s the brand I have, or I have weird teeth?
Summer fruit picking: My friend and I decided to go on a small hike and pick berries. He couldn’t remember where the berries were so we wandered around, got lost, eventually found the berries, and 4 hours later made it home. Even though we got lost, it was a lot of fun, and the berries were so good.
Definitely better when someone else makes it for you. Put ginger in it, and I’m in!!
We never went fruit picking when I was a kid… I feel like I’ve missed out!!
I love the last bullet point of your instructions- let the healing and love begin. It’s very hippy like.
Pick one favorite memory? I have so many. The one I think about eery time I see strawberries from Watsonville California is when my son was a baby. We would go picking, I would set him in the middle of a row of berries he sat there and stuffed his face with so many berries that it was as red, as the fire engine red overalls that he was wearing. When we went to have our basket weighed the lady asked if she should have weighed him too because he looked liked he had eaten a lot of berries!
Oh. Wow. That looks amazing! I’ve been making sorbets with whole frozen oranges + ginger, which is pretty rad too.
Glad you’re taking a break, mad-woman-face!
The past few summers I have gone wild berry picking with my friend Wendy. It is always too hot and humid. We have no fear and walk thru bushes and get scratched up. But it is always worth it.
Berries are berrilious and so healthy for you too! Sorbet looks amazing!! On my way to health food store to pick up some ginger. I cant wait to make my very own. Another sorbet/smoothie I make is with frozen blueberries, blackberries, pineapples, acai berry unsweetened, kiwi, hint of mint, & fresh kale. YUMMY!! Your site ROCKS!!! I just discovered it thru another site – im blessed!!!
Looks beautiful and sounds even better – frozen berries, ginger AND frozen pineapple? Yes please!
Best medicine ever! What a sweetheart for making it for you :)
YUM! Sounds fabulous.
“It is the berry growing right in your very own backyard that you can pick and eat right off the tree. That is the best.” Love this, so true!
