  1. Great article but…. I once went on a school field trip with my then 8 year old step daughter. I observed from a small distance as she sat down with her two friends for lunch. They all took out their lunches, my stepdaughter’s rigorously healthy food was set aside, and the ‘goldfish’ lunches of the other two was shared three ways. This was done with so little discussion, that I realized it was a daily event. AAgh! All that effort her mother and I were making – probably enriching the garbage each day. It was a revelation I decided to do good on the things we could control – breakfast, snacks and supper – and take a deep breath and accept what can’t be controlled – school lunch. I modified my approach to ‘semi-healthy but desirable when with peers’.

  2. This article was informative and alarming! With a having a two year old I am forever struggling to find easy, prepackaged snacks to carry on the go that are nutritious. While we make most things homemade and avoid processed as much as possible, goldfish crackers have become a staple item in the “on the go” snack category. What kinds/brands of snacks do you suggest that are quick and easy to grab (including prepackaged) for toddlers/young kids? Your article was great but wish it mentioned actual brands that meet the criteria you listed. Thanks!!

  3. I used to love these as an adult and have almost bought them again for a snack. Thank you for all this important information. I hope to try making your crackers instead. So many choices!! YUM!!

  4. You really had me with the crisco article I just read, and then when you say all this extreme stuff, like gluten exacerbates autism, you lose me! Now I don’t know whether to believe the crisco article. Appreciate your efforts, but please consider the impact of the extreme claims.

  5. I’m no doctor, but as someone who has significant knowledge of food and health I would like to point out that gluten is not bad and is not hard for normal bodys to digest. The only reasons why some people don’t eat it is because they have something called celiac disease which is why some people will have symptoms of discomfort. Also milk has had many reports and studies written about it. It has been shown that sometimes it is good or maybe bad and sometimes nothing happens. Bad symptoms can come from lactose intolerance where the body cannot digest lactose and therefore harms the body. MSG is known as harmful because a racist man said that everytime he ate Chinese food he got a headache and if you think about it, if it caused headaches then why do people in china still use it. Now I am not saying you are making false claims, but it does seem a little excessive to say things will exacerbate autism in someone. If you would reply with a answer that would be great. Again I can see that this was from the heart and I am not throwing hate, but please tell me why I am wrong

  6. Bravo on this informative and detailed article. We also no know that non-organic wheat products contain high levels of glyphosate herbicides which have been linked to cancer, fatty liver and other harmful diseases. Last thing you want in your child’s lunchbox..

  7. Let’s take a step back and assess the types of messaging this type of approach to food can have on children. The type of alarm, shock attempt wording and overall thinking leads to the promotion of disordered eating in children. Your views here are extreme and completely ignore individuals of lower socio economic status who may not have the time or financial flexibility to be worried about oil and pesticides in their food. This article is extremely ignorant and another example of white-washed dietary propaganda creating eating disorders in our youth.

  8. Many cultures across the world relied on (and continue to rely on) gluten and dairy for thousands of years. This article seems to forget that. I think the author would benefit from understanding the article influence score of various publications and cosmopolitan diets/cultures. Just because something is a study does not mean its has well performed experimental design. Science is critical when analyzing any factor or unknown variable, but studies must be well designed. You can also find many conflicting studies in more complex topics such as this, so anyone can cite a few studies supporting their view for topics like this. There are also many numerous studies showing the opposite, including ones with AIS above 5.0. Food for thought.

  9. Thanks for the info. I been eating goldfish my entire life and im happy. If we worried about everything we ate we would starve!!
