  1. Right from the beginning I knew it could NOT be healthy. I did look up the ingredients and just could not believe they are claiming it’s a healthy viable alternative. What a crock. I do eat meat, and have found a wonderful supplier who delivers twice a month at a local street corner! Shout out to @LunaFieldFarm in Manitoba!

  2. Thank you for this post. I knew it wasn’t the healthiest but haven’t had the time to research the ingredients…. great article!

  3. meghan thank you for the great info on beyond burgers. i will pass this info on to my friends and definitely make my own with your delicious recipes. again thank you

  4. Thank you for your credible opinion based on your valuable and thorough research. I too reached the conclusion that these burgers are not as healthy as they “claim”+ to be or are “marketed” as being, which was my first clue. After I thought logically about where they are sold , I thought…I don’t eat at A & W or Tim Hortons so why would I go there to get a Beyond Beef Burger? Most of the “food” being sold in those stores in my opinion, is questionable. Reading beyond the ingredients is necessary if you want to really know and trust what you’re eating.
I’m looking forward to trying some of the recipes you included, thanks!

  5. Thank you so much for writing this article! I hate the marketing that these are a healthy alternative. They are not. I suffer from inflammation and there are so many ingredients in the beyond burger that are a trigger. I wish we all could learn to love veggie burgers that are wholesome and yummy without having to pretend that it is a meat burger. I think as a community – if not eating meat is too hard – the right idea of choosing local sustainable meats and eating less of it is a start.

  6. It’s a TREAT! That’s all it is. Eat it the same way you would eat a normal burger. If you care for your health, you won’t eat any processed food a lot, as simple as that.

    Thank you for the info!

  7. I totally agree, Meghan. Impossible burgers and Beyond Beef are still processed and unnatural. I get my beef from a local rancher since I live in Texas so I’m very lucky not to have to buy questionable beef at a grocery store. I’d rather skip the faux beef stuff anyway. Nothing wrong with having a salad either!

  8. Thanks for the informative piece. I’ve recently been working with one of our dietitians at the University of British Columbia on an article that covers some of the same ground, and it was evident to me that you have some backup on this!

  9. Great post Meghan! You managed to highlight the pros and cons of both eating meat and not eating meat without being judgemental. And of educating us on what this meat alternative is and how it may be affecting our health! Thanks!

  10. I’ve been a vegetarian for many decades.
Occasionally in the past (maybe once or twice a year) I would have a veggie burger at a local restaurant (before Beyond Meat came along) and I’ve never thought much about it. Several months ago the menu made a point of saying that their veggie burger was now the Beyond Meat brand. My husband and I both got one and thought it tasted good. He didn’t experience any problems afterwards, but even by the time we left the restaurant I was feeling weird and I felt pretty awful the whole evening! I can’t even describe how I felt. I have never ever felt like that before (and I’m 72 years old and don’t generally have problems with food). It felt like what I’d eaten was doing Very bad things to my whole body! I would never ever have one again! Ever!!!

  11. Hello, I stumbled upon your article because I was looking for info on Beyond Burgers. I actually really like them and was eating about 4 burgers a week. I have lately been concerned with a continuous mild headache that ive had for a couple of months. And im curious if BB is the culprit. Im completely removing them from my diet. I will know soon enough if the headaches disappear . Thank you

  12. Great article! I’ve wondered this myself so many times. Have you seen a new meat alternative out there called Shroomeats? I think it would be something worth looking into.
